The Importance of Ownership

What does it mean to own something? Standard definitions here aren’t particularly helpful. Merriam-Webster says it’s the “state, relation, or fact of being an owner”. So let’s ask the question in this way. What does ownership look like?

Examples we may think of include owning a home, a car, or some other significant possession. In these cases one physically possesses an object. This object fully belongs to the “owner”. It’s also no coincidence the mind gravitate toward important objects with this example. We’re less likely to think of ourselves “owning” a pen than “owning” a home. Why is that so? Put simply, because ownership is important. For all of human history, being able to truly own something is rare and highly prized.

But why is ownership important? The answer has roots in our evolutionary and social history. To own something means no one else can own it, providing a material or immaterial advantage, depending on what is owned. Owning something also provides a psychological stimulus. It’s the same reason modern day shoppers feel a rush after a new purchase. Acquiring and owning something new is exciting. Ownership also has a deeper meaning than providing advantage or stimulus. It provides meaning.

To own something is to feel deeply connected to it. Research has proven this connection time and time again -

This article from Forbes outlines the importance of ownership in the workplace, through the lens of engagement and productivity. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The thread here is that ownership of a task, thing, or asset implies a much deeper connection and relationship between object and owner.

So what about crypto? This is a field where true ownership is especially important. To truly own your crypto you must be able to have free control over it. Having your crypto stored in such a way that you can hold it in your hand enables this. Truly owning your crypto means you are:

(1) Holding an advantage

(2) Benefitting your mind (less uncertainty, more control)

(3) Fully buying in to a powerful system

In summary, ownership is an essential concept for humans. True ownership of crypto puts the power in your hands.
